Goodyear voters, you deserve whatever you get.

You had your chance to do something about a city council that was run by city employees with council people who don’t ask questions and at times do not even appear to understand what is in front of them and a spin meister city manager.

But you voted every single one of them IN.

You even voted in a 46 year old former demoted city fire chief who will now be working three different jobs but in spite of that obvious physical capability is collecting on a multi-million dollar settlement for doing nothing because he says he hurt his back when a fence fell on him and can’t do his former job anymore.

You just elected;

  1. A 72 year old grandma who’s campaign money came from developers and public safety unions from other cities and does not know the difference between an income statement and a balance sheet.
  2. A local jeweler, who’s business relies on local purchases and who will do nothing to cross any of the city unions because her business would be at risk. Based upon her public statements at voter forums she may even have less financial understanding than the grandma.
  3. The former fire chief mentioned above.
  4. A semi-professional city volunteer who has flip flopped on her spending positions during this election but who previously served on a city public safety committee that recommended a separate “public safety tax”.
  5. An attorney who is the least bad of the bunch, but who has a very demanding career, new small business to run, and has done nothing to distinguish herself with any independent thinking in her previous one year appointed stint on council.

And you already have on council;

  1. A former city employee.

Yep, Goodyear, these folks are going to be there for you to make the “tough” decisions when it comes to choosing in the next few years whether or not live within the city’s means and cut programs, employee benefits, and staffing levels or instead, just raise your taxes.

Good luck, Goodyear. You deserve exactly what you get.

  1. While the election results are a personal disappointment, it is even more discouraging to see that issues apparently didn’t matter to a great many voters.

Those elected would have you believe that everything’s coming up roses. No matter that city finances are off the rails, that taxes are too high, that business development has put all its eggs in Westcor’s basket.

The results also speak loudly to the benefits of special interest endorsements and campaign contributions.

My sincere thanks to the 1,167 Goodyear residents who endorsed me. Please know that I’m not giving up. I will continue to be engaged and do my best to hold the mayor and council accountable for their actions. And yes, I’ll give it another go in 2013.

    • I think the greatest victory was the 9000 voters that did come out and vote, a significant increase from the last election, I calculate that about 180 votes out of 9000 decided the election, HB you called it months ago that the election would be decided on by about 200 people.

The incumbants may sit back now and enjoy the limelight for a short period, but they should really pause and take a deep breath and ask themselves am I serving the community to the best of the City or myself – when 48% voted for change vs 15% in the last election. Time will tell if anything was gained through this tough election and if any lessons were learned. There is a lot of work ahead and a short time to get it done, Goodluck 2011 City Council. Look, Listen, Hear, Read, and Understand before casting your vote, since 48% of us think you could be doing a better job

City Management less material, 110 slides in 3 hours with no break and then ask for a vote is unfair and unrealistic. Present 3 topics, each topic has 30 min, and then pause to reflect then move for a vote, might be a better use of Council time. Just a thought

  2. I wonder if Howard ever has anything good to say about anyone. These vindictive attacks are way off base. I am happy to see that all the sore losers people lost. City voters are a lot smarter than you think! Good for you Goodyear.

At this point I can just sit back and watch. The only upside of the fine challengers who ran being defeated is that those who brought Goodyear to near ruin are the ones who will now have to deal with it.

If the challengers had won, once the cuts begin (and they WILL begin, eventually) then the old incumbents would have been able to sit on the side lines and blame the new folks. Now they will have to lay down in the mess that they have made themselves.

    • Hey, Ed, you’re such a smart guy, let’s you and I set up a debate about Goodyear’s current direction.
You can defend what those who were just re-elected have done to get us here, and I’ll continue with my position. That even gives you an advantage, because you already know all of my arguments and can prepare ahead of time.

How about it, Ed? Mano a mano. I’m sure you can arrange for a room somewhere in Pebble Creek to host it, and maybe get the Goldwater Institute guy or Ken Bennet to moderate. Since both of them agree with my position, that will even up the debate.

  3. Howard,
This author misses the point about right or wrong. That is yet to be decided. Am I wrong about the need for the city to be more frugal? That won’t be determined for another year or so. We’ll see how long those elected decide they want to continue running deficits until there is no money left.

Well what can I say you where (were) wrong very very wrong. What makes this such a great night is the fact that it proves the citizens of Goodyear are all much smarter than you.

See you in two i’m sure Don’t count on it. Goodyear is on it’s own with the Yahoos they’ve elected.

  4. Howard,
You were wrong again and the good citizens of Goodyear chose correctly. They are much smarter then you are.

    Dear Howard,
It’s very clear you are wallowing in your grief that none of the candidates you supported were elected. Despite the campaign rhetoric born from this site and the many attempts made to discredit anyone who disagrees with you, it is time to take that energy and apply it to some good. Though based on your past history, I am not certain that you are capable of channeling your hate and anger toward anything constructive. If anything this blog and the ugliness that came from it, hurt the candidates that you supported. From the first time you made false accusations, Goodyear saw through it. The votes prove it.

  6. Bravo to the voters of Goodyear. Howard, I have to hand it to you. You really came through for the candidates. Not the candidates that you supported but the candidates you helped. You were the biggest single factor that destroyed the election for your team. Thank you for your help Goodyear can sleep easy tonight. You can go and wipe wendys tears. Next time they will know not to include you in their campaign strategy. Take care for as I have had my fun and no longer care to waste my time with you.

  7. So the residents of the depends wearing community of PebbleCreek finally got a couple of the old girls in. Let’s see how much did it cost Wally and Georgia for the two seats they bought? Looks like between the two old gals it cost them about $35,000 dollars. All that money and all Georgia could get was 51% of the vote? Wow I hope it was worth it. She barely beat two candidates with zero name recognition. Georgia claims she took the high road, but she sure had her minions to do her dirty work for her. Looks like the depends wearing crowd also helped Georgia’s other side kick, the stunningly clever Joanne Osborne steal a seat, and hopefully Wally won’t be caught napping on the dais. CMullins, Mac77, Mike Williams so glad the rest of us won’t have to suffer through your boring posts anymore. With any luck you will all have dementia soon. Pretty soon this city is going to wake up and realize that the old farts in PebbleCreek just need to stay locked behind the gates and not venture out into the rest of the city. The battle to rescue Goodyear away from the PebbleCreek crowd has just begun. Georgia is going to have about the same luck the President has had in being a consensus builder when half of the voters voted for someone else. Good luck with that.

  8. Thank you Bill Stipp/Rob Antonucci/one of Georgia’s consultants/an incumbent’s spouse, for having the time to constantly contribute to my blog.

    Howard:
It looks like the negativity that you Au contraire. I think the challengers lost because they failed to make this election about the incumbents. Sean started to do it a little in the second forum, I admit, the format did not make it easy and the two newspapers in the bag were the last straw and Cavanaugh tried to push on the above candidates failed. The voters as well as a majority of your readers have spoke.

I’m glad that this election shows your viciousness and thinking hold little to no weight with a majority of the citizens of Goodyear.
Let take a look at the candidates you wanted:

    1. Rassas- a pilot who could be called to active duty at any time as well as a business owner who stated “I can give 12 days a month to the job of mayor”

    2. Freeman- Anti public safety and no experience for council, and in the ex-mayors pocket

    3. Antonucci- a mechanic who had zero government experience

    4. Bohm- someone who though we shouldn’t cut education

    5. Matlin- enough said

Prediction: you, Joan Shields, and Cavanaugh will attempt to find something that makes you so angry that you will start a recall effort on one or more candidates within 6 months. When this does happen I hope you think back to this moment and look at the votes and reconsider (you probably won’t).

Maybe you should take this defeat and start using your powers of half truths for good…ITS A NEW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Name calling! You couldn’t help yourself, could you? You won the election, but you realize that you have lost the debate because the facts simply do not support your positions.

BTW, if you are so scared that our city is in/will be in ruin maybe you should move back to IL or CO or wherever you cam from.
