Gary Gelzer and the PRIVILEGE of Liberals

Barack Obama did it. He made a slip of the tongue to Joe the Plumber one day while campaigning door to door in Ohio when he spoke his well known, “spread the wealth around” comment.

We should have listened more carefully.

As reported in yesterday’s AZ Republic, Goodyear city council political appointee Gary Gelzer had his own “Joe the Plumber” moment when Gelzer was quoted as follows when commenting on Goodyear’s $635 annual liquor license renewal fee;

“Having the privilege to sell liquor is worth something a little bit

above and beyond what it costs the city to check your records on an annual basis”.

THE PRIVILEGE? REALLY? THE PRIVILEGE? And just who does Gary think is passing out these privileges of which he speaks? Might that be Goodyear city council to which Gary was appointed last year? It should be no surprise, I guess, to hear this kind of rhetoric from Gary who claims to be a liberal arts major with an exclusive east coast private school graduate education… just like Barack Obama.

Gary’s statement reveals that Gary thinks that honest, hard working citizens who have the audacity to take the risk of starting a business in Goodyear which happens to involve the sale of liquor are being provided some kind of privilege to do so by the city of Goodyear and as a result Goodyear should be able to require those same job creators to pay some kind of fee for that privilege.

In fact, the only privilege here is how privileged Goodyear is when a business chooses to operate here.

The Declaration of Independence begins as follows;

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

The Tenth Amendment to The Constitution of the United States reads;

Amendment X

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.

Consent of the governed.

Reserved to the people.

Unlike England, where the monarch received it’s power and privileges from God and those privileges were dispensed to the government and then to the people, the Founding Fathers formed the United States as a constitutional democracy in order to RESTRICT the powers and rights of the government, NOT the people. Any right, power, or privilege NOT SPECIFICALLY GIVEN to the government would belong to the PEOPLE because it was given to the PEOPLE, not the monarch, by God.

That was the true genius and departure from everything that went before it of the founding of our democracy.

People like Gary Gelzer don’t get that. Instead they start with a premise, as Gary’s statement clearly demonstrates, that the people are GIVEN rights, and privileges, by the GOVERNMENT, not the other way around.

Those people are commonly called LIBERALS.

I try not to call people names on this blog but there you have it, I couldn’t help myself, I’ve called Gary a name. Gary Gelzer is a liberal.

There are 257 days until Goodyear’s next city council election on March 12, 2013. Let’s hope Goodyear is listening this time.

    I agree with this statement. Arizona is hell-bent driving people out of Arizona and is a very unwelcoming state. Big business like the private prison corporations will flourish in this state that offers nothing for the people except being a “prospect” for the mass industrial prison complex.

    Anyone who opens a business here is at great risk in this state and the city of Goodyear should feel privileged, not the other way around.

    The names “conservative” and “liberal” mean different things to different people. I would describe Gary as an elitist, that fits in the 1%, not a liberal. Who are the elitists in Arizona? Controlling and driving the state into a deeper sink hole. The Goodyear City Council seems to follow their lead.

    If Arizona calls itself a “compassionate conservative state (ala Bush “compassionate conservative”), then I would not be a “conservative”. I find it a total hypocrisy in that Government is the #1 employer in the state, and the pensions are extravagant for “public servants”. I find it unconscionable Arizona favors incarceration of its people, making it #1 in the state budget, while slashing education putting it at the bottom in the nation. Meanwhile, they want to attract high tech businesses where highly educated people are needed. Most of those people are from other countries — not welcomed in Arizona.

  2. Who profits from the “sale” of the complex to the City of Goodyear? List those parties and what they will make in the “sale”.

  3. Just as it does not matter what Obama says it will not matter what Gary Gelzer says. The majority in PebbleCreek remind me of mindless robots who will be handed a slate of candidates that will come with instructions that say something like this: “here are our neighbors and friends in the creek that we need to vote for”. Does not matter what they stand for or who they are. It just matters that they share an address behind the gates and they see each other at the golf course or the cocktail party. The mindless sheep will do as requested and this time Gary won’t have to buy himself a seat–he just has to pass around the PebbleCreek slate and wait for the votes to come in.
