Are John Yantis and the Arizona Republic Just Stupid or Merely Uniformed?

Editor’s note; There won’t be any contested elections in Goodyear this time around. Even though the local newspapers’ behaviors are in large part to blame for that, if you read yesterday’s AZ Republic, you’d think we are coming into a hotly contested election race in Goodyear soon.

What an insightful and well researched article yesterday from AZ Republic crack reporter John Yantis. (here it is; Yantis AZ Rep GY Election Art0001 )

Here is some of the nonsense he wrote;

“An unexpected vacancy on the City Council will bring early attention to Goodyear’s election season”.

“the vacant seat could generate more attention from would-be politicos”

For now, only the three incumbents and the head of the SWV Chamber (handpicked by Georgia and Osborne, by the way) have expressed interest in running”

“those running in March must gather …461 signatures… (by) Dec. 12”

Sounds like Yantis and the AZ Republic are looking forward to another good election contest to cover in Goodyear come March.
JUST WHO DO THEY THINK IS GOING TO RUN AGAINST THE INCUMBENTS THIS TIME?

Prior to writing this article, did John or anyone else at AZ Republic think to interview Gary Gibbs, or Sean Rassas, or Wendy Freeman, all of whom ran last time and lost?  Nope, as usual, they only interviewed city officials and their selected serfs, giving them a platform for name recognition and posturing about how “fair” and “transparent” they all are.

Did they ask any of the former challengers from the last election if they plan to run for mayor or council in Goodyear? Did they ask them if they would like to be publicly trashed again on AZ Republic’s on line blog by Georgia Lord supporters using fake names writing vile lies about the candidates?  AZ Republic says they police their blog but that’s not true as I know from direct experience.  You have to police it yourself. And even if you do, they don’t stop people from writing crap about you and in one former candidate’s case their family.  They just take down the crap you object to and let the same person write the same crap a few days later.

I’m certain upstanding local business people like Rassas and Freeman want that kind of stuff to come up when someone google’s their name one day who is considering doing business with them.  Or even for a retiree like Gibbs, who needs the hassel?

It might be different if local media would take an interest in investigating the financial duress of the city of Goodyear.  Like, why does Goodyear keep saying they are living within their means while at the same time sending me an email EXPLAINING where they think they spent the $35 million more than they took in over the last 4 years in the General Fund?  I send my blog links to both papers.  Do you think they would follow up on something as clear as that? Instead, these reporters, these supposed stewards of the public trust, including the AZ Republic and the West Valley View endorsed all the incumbents last time. And why?  Mostly, because they were incumbents.

They endorsed Wally Campbell, whose only claim to previous employment was to work on “staff” at the California legislature. What a terrific reference that is. And what does that mean?  Was she a secretary? Wally wants to spend more money building a library and restoring old buildings in a city that is broke.  Sound like California? What exactly are Wally’s financial credentials?  Where did she graduate from either high school or college?  In reply to a question about her highest level of education from the WVView she replied, “14”.  Does that mean she graduated from anywhere or did she leave school at age 14?

Compare Wally to Wendy Freeman, who ran against her, someone with a financial background and who has shown the ability to start, operate, and continue her own business.  Good choice, AZ Republic.  Wally might volunteer for a lot of stuff and may even be well intentioned but it is obvious from council video that she doesn’t know enough about what is being said during council financial discussions to even ask meaningful questions.

And of course AZ Republic endorsed Georgia Lord for mayor.  There’s a great pick.  It turns out the mayor of Goodyear doesn’t even have the slightest idea of what the unemployment rate is in her great city.  Compare her credentials to her opponent in the last election, Sean Rassas, an F-16 flight trainer, a successful businessman with a growing business in a bad economy, and a strong business education.

And how about Joanne Osborne?  They endorsed her too. They said she was better because of, “her broad experiences in Goodyear life”. What the hell does that mean?  Did they ask Joanne if she knew the difference between an income statement and a balance sheet?

Here is a good idea.  AZ Republic and the SWV Chamber can sponsor a debate with all those running so they can all AGREE with each other for a few more hours.  Just like they all AGREE on everything that comes up before city council when they all AGREE to keep spending your tax money.

News flash for John Yantis and the AZ Republic
The combination of Georgia’s money from developers, union PACs from around the state, and monied business interests, the AZ Republic’s lack of fact checking anything the Goodyear city council tells them, AZ Republic’s nasty, unmonitored blog, their uninformed choice of incumbents for incumbents’ sake, and voila, there will be no election races in Goodyear this time around because the bad guys will run unopposed. Why would anyone run again in Goodyear unless they were handpicked by the bunch led by two grandmas with perhaps a high school diploma between them, two former city employees, a deer in the headlights cheer leading club joiner and a lawyer?

Not that I have anything against grandmas, but in this case, they are completely unqualified for their council responsibilities, it shows in how badly Goodyear has been managed into oblivion, and it amazes me that neither local newspaper has ever come to this conclusion.

So I hope all you Goodyear voters (especially the Creekers who are really the only people in Goodyear besides city employees who even take the time to vote in local elections) like the people who about 4,500 of you voted for last time (Goodyear’s population is over 60,000 but council winners garnered less than 5,000 votes last time) because they are going to be here for a while mis-spending your money for you.

Oh, yeah, and just so you can check, here are all the endorsements from the last election… including mine.
