High School, Facebook, the ME Generation

I recently had an opportunity to witness why my generation growing up in the late 60s and 70s is known as the ME Generation. Over 40 years later this group continues to demonstrate their slobbering, self indulgent, self absorbed, love affair with… themselves. It has always been about and turns out continues to be about them.

You won’t hear me complaining. Maybe I’m an exception, but I feel very fortunate for everything that was provided to me and all the opportunities I had growing up “privileged” in a middle to upper middle class Midwest suburb. Our high school even had the only indoor swimming pool I had ever seen back in 1971 and maybe the only one in that part of the state. How many of you had a high school with an indoor swimming pool?

But you would not think that from reading a recent Facebook thread on one of my high school’s Facebook pages. Blame and recrimination of parents, “the system”, even well intentioned school counselors is all one sees from these now sixty something baby boomers (emphasis on Baby). Here are some examples:

Sally (these are not their real names)
“I was just in (name of city) for a few days (tying up loose ends of my Dad’s estate, holy cow….) … I have endless regret (which is stupidly fruitless, of course) that I didn’t engage more in high school, but I was a cesspool of fears, social anxiety, and was utterly preoccupied with a home life that was, well, dysfunctional in the extreme. … Substance abuse and mental illness were taboo topics then. The big family secrets. We move on now of course, because the present is all we have. But I’ve always wondered, having felt so isolated back then in ’67, who else out there might feel that events at home hung over their days at X High School? Does anyone else feel their school days were shadowed by sh*t at home?”

Keep in mind, Sally is someone who had comparatively limitless opportunities in those days compared to most others in the world. Someone living in the top 2% of society in the US, perhaps the world, and rather than maturing to understand that she wasted that opportunity all on her own, here she is ruing that her dysfunctional family is what held her back.

In reality, while in high school, Sally and the rest of her now complaining Facebook friends were immersed in a near limitless sea of mostly well meaning parents, teachers, friends, money, and opportunities like no one had ever lived before back in the late 60s early 70s. By their own admission, they withdrew from that, but apparently continue to blame others for their lack of initiative and motivation.

I have friends from school whose parents were alcoholics and worse. But my friends didn’t withdraw. Instead, these people with spine and gumption decided that, “I’m getting out of here as fast as I can and I’m doing it by taking all I can from these opportunities presented to me and go get a good education that leads to a good job”. Notice Sally omits any details of exactly what was more “dysfunctional” about her family than any other (like we don’t all have our issues) as she merely alludes to mental illness and substance abuse. But hey, after all these years, at least her dad had an estate, and what do you want to bet Sally has already cashed the checks from it too?

Emily Vu (that is her real name)
Compare Sally to say, Emily Vu, a Vietnam refugee who now runs her own accounting firm in the US, whose family was probably being bombed by napalm paid for by Sally’s family’s income taxes back in the 70s while Sally sulked in her Midwest Camelot. The primary difference between Emily and Sally is that Emily didn’t waste time and energy blaming others for her plight, like Sally does. Instead, she took whatever opportunities presented themselves (immigration to the US probably to a ghetto) and made the most of them.

And then someone (I’ll call him Dave) had the nerve to suggest in a post to these self indulgent Facebook blamers, that, “I enjoyed myself immensely, have no regrets and always loved living my life. To the complainers and pessimists? Go get one.” Dave obviously feels that it is UP TO YOU, not everyone else, how you live your life. Dave makes life happen, Sally and her friends have let life happen to them.

And I love this next part because it is so predictable. We all know from experience what happens when someone with a different view has the audacity to even mention it to any liberal progressives like Sally and her pals.

Yep, Sally et al start name calling.

And did they ever. It started with (I’ll call her Becky) who had this deep sentiment, “My sister and I definitely had some strange home lives but we got thru that and high school also- thank God. And yes, I’m sure we thought everyone else had Ozzie and Harriet families and (as) for Dave- glad your life has been rosy but go fxxx yourself

Of course Sis agreed with Becky, praising that her sister, “gets to the heart of things.”

Oh pulleezze!

And then this from “Mike” another slobbering blamer, “Not that I disagree with your last sentiment, Becky, but someone who would say what (Dave) did is likely to be as screwed up as all of the rest of us combined. Don’t you think? … you and I and most people on this thread are more advanced in our understanding than this guy is. He could stand to see a therapist.”

I’m not making this up, these are direct quotes from this Facebook thread. It is all there in black and white. If Dave does not agree with me then he can go F himself and on top of that he “must” be crazy. Name calling and demonizing, the pillars of liberal progressive blame theology; that, and treatment of any and all self defined mental issues with chemicals as Becky opines, ”Here we are as adults still trying to find someone who might understand what dysfunctional families and life as a teen was like and this guy comes along to tell us to get a life. He needs better meds…or maybe we need his!”

Remember, these people are in their sixties, and this is over FOURTY years later. And Becky still wants someone to understand that, “they did this to me, it’s not my fault.” I’m certain, Becky had nothing to do with any of the bad stuff that ever happened in her life, only the good stuff.

And there you have it folks. Fourty years after frittering away a childhood of economic and social privilege compared to most of America and certainly compared to the rest of the world at that time, the ME generation has not changed one bit. They may have even gotten worse in their old age as time allows them to recall only what suits their purpose; to blame others, and to NEVER take responsibility for their own situation unless it suits them.

There were over 80 something posts in this Facebook thread (so far). Time on their hands? Well, they still don’t seem to be working too hard, eh? Now they can waste their time blaming everyone else for their failures on Facebook, the world’s foremost outlet to find out just how self absorbed most people in the world happen to be.

Ms. Georgia Lord, Mayor,City of Goodyear

190 N Litchfield Road

Goodyear, AZ 85338

Dear Madam Mayor:

I am writing to ask you to support, as an interim step, subject to a final candidate selection, the placement of Goodyear Citizen Howard D. Brodbeck as City Manager effective April 1, 2012.

I know this may come as a shock, given Howard’s direct and explicit challenges of the previous City Manager and Staff and of previous and current Council.    Which is why he is the most obvious candidate for the position, he does and will not back down, he can’t be bought, he will develop a strategic plan toward fiscal security for the taxpayers of our City, and he will challenge every expenditure no matter how small. If you recall, he served the city well during the CBC process.

As the leader of our city, now is the time to put aside any personal or political feelings you may have towards Howard and recognize, that regardless of the manner of getting his point across, he does have the city’s interest at heart and I believe he will serve the City of Goodyear well.

The City is coming into budget season, we know how those approvals have gone in the past, let Howard help you and Council understand why the budget process is important and how to “manage” our city’s limited resources and maximize the investments and assets in place today during this next FY.

I am sure you are thinking, NO, never in a million years and that would be a sad emotional response and I believe short sighted.   You need a manager that has no ties to government, is not afraid to say no and is not dependant on the job to meet day to day living requirements; Howard is a successful, retired business executive and does not need to work and earn a living to support his family.   You have nothing to lose and the city has a lot to gain from Howard’s tenacity and no nonsense fiscal responsibility.

Thank you for your support.

Arrest Warrants Issued in Goodyear for Brewer and Obama?

In this town, some feel that this could really happen. Thanks to a reader for the suggestion.

The Goodyear, Arizona Police Department issued felony assault and disorderly conduct arrest warrants for Jan Brewer and Barack Obama today based upon their chilling encounter on the tarmac yesterday in Phoenix.

“He clearly touched her elbow,” stated interim fire chief/interim assistant city manager/interim Roger Matlin victim Paul Luizzi, “and he may have even tried to ‘lead her away’ which as we have shown in our town has felony implications.”  “I had flashbacks when I saw the photo in the paper today of my encounter with mass disorderly conduct-or Roger Matlin,” Luizzi added.  “And furthermore I had bad dreams again last night about the entire sordid Matlin affair” he said.

“She was pointing at him! She was pointing at him! She was pointing at him! And I think she may have touched him,” witness extraordinaire and Assistant City Manager and Chief Tattletale Brian Dalke added.  Dalke was working behind the scenes later to make certain everyone in the city had their stories straight.

“We’re going after them, and we will not leave one stone unturned in our expected several month investigation and pursuit of justice”, added GY’s new police chief at the direction of emails from city council, (for which I will now have to submit a records request because they clearly violate Arizona open meeting laws). “No one besides a few GY city employees heard any disturbance at the council meeting  in the Matlin case, so just because there were jet engines running that prevented us from hearing what Brewer and Obama actually said to each other won’t matter either, ” he added.

“I have experience in these matters, and disorderly conduct will not be tolerated in our city,” added Fischbach with emphasis.

This Just In; Anonymous Blogger Discloses Latest Prison Happenings

Editor’s note;

The following is from Kemosabe, who chooses to remain anonymous, and claims that the following was published in the National Enquirer this morning.

President Obama announced today that he has resolved the problem of moving the approximately 5,000 Gitmo detainees from Guantanamo Bay to a US prison. In a joint press statement with Mayor Georgia Lord of Goodyear, Arizona, Georgia and Obama announced that a new facility was in the process of being approved in the western Phoenix suburb of Goodyear, AZ.

According to Mayor Georgia, “we have a tremendous location, we have a very accepting community, and we have a huge debt burden in our city that I need to take care of so that I can continue overspending on new capital projects and keep my public union, developers, and city employee supporters happy.  Rest assured and you can be certain that I have received no benefits from this deal and myself and my fellow council members are always listening to and want to hear from Goodyear’s residents on everything we do.”

Obama seemed extremely pleased to have this issue off his desk for a mere $300 million dollars which is how much the federal government has agreed to pay Goodyear to take all of the Gitmo prisoners.  Mayor Georgia said that the $300 million (which is about equal to Goodyear’s current overwhelming city debt) was originally planned to be used to pay off that debt during negotiations with the government but now that the deal has been struck Georgia and the rest of her tax and spend council members have decided that they might need the money in order to buy more votes after the deal gets public so they will delay any decisions on where the money will be spent until after Goodyear city council completes its next off site retreat.  The retreat is scheduled to be held at an unnamed posh resort on the Riviera.  Regarding criticism of the expense of the off site by a local blogger, Georgia said, “we couldn’t find anywhere more expensive than that and I deserve it!”

Goodyear Vice Mayor Joanne (Yippee) Osborne added that the name of the new prison facility will be “The Lord’s Penitentiary” in honor of mayor Georgia. Osborne also threw in a plug about Osborne Jewelry’s new store which will be located at the visitor’s center of the facility where in an agreement with GEO Inc., each visiting oil sheik to the facility will be required to spend not less than $150,000 per wife.

In other news surrounding the new prison;

The law firm of Bain and Lauritano of Glendale, AZ has announced a 50 year exclusive agreement to represent all future Gitmo detainees. According to the firm, they could only get new detainees since most of the existing ones already had representation and they were accused of blackmail by several of the current legal teams due to B&L’s threat to derail the prison deal if B&L did not get what they wanted.  Obama had to step in to say that even in Chicago, B&L’s desired terms would not fly.

Goodyear City Manager John Fischbach, who we are told has left on a 3 month around the world vacation awarded to him by Gary (vacations don’t cost anything) Gelzer announced in a written statement for the press that his Goodyear Ball Park operations director would have details soon of the new year-round minor league  baseball season that will begin at the Goodyear Ball Park as soon as the prison is complete and the detainees are available for games.  Fischbach said in his statement that he expects to field 12 teams of prison inmates who will play ball for (he told council) a “packed” stadium. Goodyear city council did not question any of Fishbach’s attendence claims.  Fischbach said with the influx of rich middle eastern visitors that he expects to see in Goodyear for the new league’s games, the nearly 10% sales tax on items sold in Goodyear might be raised since “those people” have lots of money.

GEO Group, Inc. has announced that former Goodyear councilman Joe Pizzillo has accepted the $150,000 per year job of , “Honorary Warden” of the new  The Lord’s Penitentiary prison.  Pizzillo will not be required to do anything and will receive lifetime free tickets to all Goodyear ball park baseball games including the new Gitmo league games when they start.

In related news, the six new fire stations that are under construction in the western part of Goodyear are only over budget by about $3.2 million dollars each according to project manager and CEO of Fire Services Corp. Bill Stipp.  As you may recall, Fire Services signed a multi year deal to manage all of Goodyear’s fire department services at an increased cost to the city of more than $1.6 mil per firefighter.  That is because each current firefighter was awarded a full retirement (just like Stipp’s) and golf membership at Pebble Creek Golf Club as part of the prison deal.  Stipp said that “by law” he was not able to give any more details.

Wally Campbell was not available for comment.  In a written statement she said she still had not been given details of any of the prison arrangements by any of the other council people.

Limited Time Offer

These four older ladies that lived in Yugoslavia always sat outside together near the church and chatted about when they were younger. One month ago they pooled their money together and bought a laptop.

They had never heard of Florida, but they just happened to click on St. Augustine, FL. and they read about the “Fountain of Youth” claimed by the Spaniards when they arrived there.

They collected up all they had and sent for four  bottles of the water.  As soon as it arrived, they drank as directed.

Here they are today.

We have a limited supply of this water available at an incredible $1,499.95 a bottle.

Committee to Re-elect Barack Obama

Put Me In Charge. New Guest Blog.

Time for some FUN!  I asked for guest bloggers.  Here is one that I got.  A little carried away….??

Put me in charge . . .  By Guest Blogger X.

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away.  If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a  job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations.  Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings.  If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing.  Ever live in a military barracks?  You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair.  Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried.  If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a “government” job.  It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you.  We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary.  If you want our money, accept our rules.  Before you say that this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self esteem,” consider that it wasn’t that long ago that taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices.  The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE!  Yes that is correct.  For you to vote would be a conflict of interest.  You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check.  If you want to vote, then get a job.
